David has a first class honours degree in Sociology from the University of Middlesex, a Masters in sociology from the University of London, a Masters from the University of Oxford, where he also qualified as a social worker, and a doctorate in Social Science from the University of Bristol. His doctoral research concerned the management of teaching and research in higher education and forms the basis for his current research interests, which are focused around the management of work in complex organisations.

At Chester David is responsible for the effective management of the Faculty of Social Science, comprising the Institute of Policing, Geography and Development Studies, the School of Law and the Departments of Psychology and Social Studies and Counselling. David chairs the Partnerships' Sub Committee and is involved in liaison with a wide range of domestic and international University partners.

He is also active in a range of management and administrative activities both inside of and outside of the University, which reflect his interest and expertise in quality assurance, curriculum development, resource modelling and academic planning. 

David has been involved in leading large projects within the University, for example, the restructuring of the academic year, and remains involved in a range of activities at this level. He is also an experienced external examiner.
