A specialist supplier of electronic manufacturing services, Altimex Ltd is experienced, capable and happy to take on one-off bespoke projects as well as large-scale high volume roll outs. They provide an end-to-end service from initial concept and design through to electronic and mechanical assembly, with technical advice and service available throughout the entire process. Fully skilled in the supply of fibre optic assemblies and cable management systems, the company have worked extensively in both the data and telecommunications industries. With research and development and manufacturing functions located at Thornton Science Park since February 2015, Altimex Ltd has successfully grown its business and has already expanded into a larger building on site. Their sister company, MJ Lighting, is also based at Thornton Science Park.

In February 2015, Altimex were looking for a large space to operate their business from. After meeting with Paul Vernon, Senior Executive Director of Commercial Operations & CEO Thornton Research Properties, Altimex decided to occupy warehouse space within Thornton’s Manley Building. The location of Thornton together with the modern and professional appearance of the campus were the main reasons Altimex chose the site for its business base.

During their time at Thornton, Altimex Ltd have engaged with the Faculty of Science and Engineering, co-located on-site. In June 2015, they participated in a student placement scheme. Two students were employed to work on various projects within the company. The placement was a success, and Altimex employed two further students in 2016. The company are now discussing the possibility of employing a PhD student to undertake a research project for MJ Lighting.

Altimex Ltd have also established collaborations with other businesses located at Thornton. These relationships were established at networking breakfasts arranged by the University of Chester’s Commercial Operations team. These events enabled Altimex to meet other on-site businesses who were able to offer a valuable service to Altimex and MJ Lighting. As a result, the company is keen to explore further interactions with other Thornton tenants, and they’re currently receiving support with this from members of the Commercial Operations team.

Since being located at Thornton, Altimex have developed five new circuit designs, using alternation machinery they previously weren’t able to use due to a lack of space in the office. The company have also experienced a significant growth in staff numbers. Upon arrival at Thornton, the company employed three members of staff. Now, Altimex Ltd and MJ Lighting Ltd collectively employ 25 people. They have also received a prestigious award from the North Wales and West Cheshire Chamber of Commerce for Business Start-up of the Year 2016. As a result of the company’s expansion, they now occupy a larger office space at Thornton.

Altimex have grown from strength to strength since arriving at Thornton Science Park. Their business is thriving, and their turnover has increased by 86.4%. Davinder Lotay, Managing Director of Altimex, comments:

Additionally, the fact the site combines academia with industry is excellent. The links between the Faculty of Science and Engineering and the commercial tenants is very good, and we have been able to benefit significantly from this.”
