About Chris Millward

Chris is a PhD candidate at the University of Chester researching the relationship between traditional making processes and modern digital technologies, whilst also exploring the part that Virtual and Augmented Realities can play in designing, making and visualising 3D forms.

Teaching

I support students on all programmes within the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Art and Design courses. I demonstrate Art and Design processes, methods and techniques covering a range of disciplines, such as bronze casting, woodwork and metal work. I have lead Experiential Learning placements offering students the opportunity to learn and develop key skills associated with professional art practice, group work and exhibition curation, both in real world and virtual environments.

Since 2016 I have been Module leader for the Creative Arts modules that form part of the University’s Foundation year – Tools and Methods of Visual Communication & Concept in Practice in Visual Communication.

Research

My artistic practice centres on the notions of organisation, repetition and the aesthetic. I have recently received funding from the University’s Learning and Teaching Institute to research the benefits of virtual learning for Art and Design students. Using a dedicated ‘Island’ campus in Second Life, I will be delivering an Experiential Learning project that aims to promote the key and fundamental elements of professional art practice. The placement will culminate in a virtual exhibition of students’ real life artwork. The exhibition will be organised, curated and promoted by the students and will be accompanied by a website and a catalogue.
