About Dr Phil Smith

Dr Smith has enjoyed an extensive career in consumer environments, which includes over 35 years’ experience of holding key management roles for household name retail businesses such as Asda and B&Q. He has held major positions to Managing Director level in international businesses such as Dutch owned SHV-Makro and French conglomerate Saint-Gobain. He brings this real-world understanding within his academic teaching to enhance classroom engagement and student learning.

He is a past Chairman of the Institute of Directors, Manchester Region; Northwest Regional Board Member of the Chartered Institute of Management; Director at West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce.

Teaching

Dr Smith has been teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students at Chester Business School since 2013. He was core module leader and senior lecturer at the China Centre between 2018 – 2021.

Research

Dr Smith was awarded ‘Best Research Paper – Technology Entrepreneurship Track’ at the Institute for Small Business and Entrepreneurship conference in November 2019. He was awarded the honorary title of Visiting Research Fellow by the university council in September 2013.
