About Prof Elizabeth Mason-Whitehead

My role incorporates a breadth of interdisciplinary responsibilities within medicine, health and social care.  My research interest in stigma of health and illness is evidenced in my research, publications, PhD supervision and teaching.  

I am engaged in the development, leadership and delivery of a number of programmes including Doctor of Medicine (Clinical MD), Physician Associate, MMed and MSc Rural Health programmes which aim to facilitate students to excel in their chosen area of health provision, whilst meeting the health needs of local communities.

I also lead The Faculty of Health and Social Care Historical Society and Riverside Museum, which. Working with volunteers in ensuring that our museum of health and medical artefacts, develops is an interesting aspect of my role. Our Historical Society offers public lectures throughout the academic year.

 My external work includes external examiner roles, PhD examinations, conference presentations, book and article reviews and academic applications. I also engage in international work, most recently The Leprosy Mission, Allahabad, India.

I am currently supervising eight PhD engaged in a wide range of research projects, examples include; stigma, mental health, higher education, experiences of veterans, occupational health, womens education in Afghanistan and leprosy stigma.

Research

  • Current  Research: 2017: The Leprosy Mission Maureen and Eddie Askew Bursary

    Stigma of leprosy research conducted in Allahabad, India, using qualitative research methods and visual methodology to identify felt stigma of people affected by leprosy, with the aim of developing a stigma intervention tool.  

    Additional Stigma Research: I have been engaged with stigma research, publishing, teaching and supervision since I was awarded my PhD in 2000. Examples of my previous projects include:

  • ‘Stigma to equality in health and social care’, a single authored text to be published by Sage in 2020
  • Stigma of teenage pregnancy.
  • Stigma of bowel disease
  • I am always interested to meet potential new PhD students, particularly those involved in researching stigma and discrimination.
