About Dr Tom Butler

My PhD was funded from grants from the Hull and East Riding Cardiac Research Trust Fund and the Clinical Biosciences Institute at the University of Hull, and examined the role of dietary fat and carbohydrate on cardiac functional and metabolic remodelling in response to hypertension and obesity. During my PhD I also completed a post-graduate certificate in research training, and worked as a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Chester, delivering lectures as part of the PG modules Nutrition in Health and Disease, Human Metabolism, and Physiology and Biochemistry of Metabolism.

Following my PhD, I studied nutrition and dietetics at the University of Chester. I am both a registered dietitian with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and British Dietetic Association (BDA), and registered nutritionist with the Association for Nutrition (AfN), specialising in nutritional science. I am an elected council member of the British Association for Cardiovascular Health and Rehabilitation (BACPR) and I am currently the programme leader for the undergraduate degree in Nutrition and Dietetics

Research

My research expertise is broadly in the area of nutrition in both the primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. I have more specific interests in the role of dietary manipulation and interventions to improve cardiac morphology following hypertension, and the role of diet in the management of Heart Failure.

My current research topics include understanding the value of the Mediterranean Diet in secondary prevention of myocardial infarction, and novel ways to improve uptake of this dietary pattern in this patient group.
