About Dr Bin Yang

Dr Yang graduated from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, China, in 2001. After that, he had two years telecommunication industrial working experience as a Technical Engineer and Consultant (Fiberhome Telecommunications Ltd) and International Business Engineer (CINTel Intelligent System, Shanghai).  He received MSc and PhD degrees in Electronic Engineering in 2004 and 2008 respectively, in the Antenna and Electromagnetics Group of the Department of Electronic Engineering, Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), UK. After the PhD, Dr Yang remained in the Antenna and Electromagnetics Group of QMUL as a Postdoctoral Researcher. In September 2013, Dr.Yang moved to the University of Bolton as a Lecturer and then joined the University of Chester as a Senior Lecturer in September 2015.

Dr.Yang’s current teaching modules are: SE 4022 Applied Electromagnetics; SE4006 Principal of Electronic and Electrical Engineering; SE5041 Electrical Machines; SE5053 Applications and Design of Robotics and Mechatronics.

Dr Yang is active in a number of research areas including the development of millimetre(mm)-wave and Terahertz (THz) measurement systems, mm-wave/THz applications in material, biology and chemistry sciences; electronic circuit, radio frequency (RF) and mm-wave technologies for Healthcare and Wellbeing; microwave metamaterials, Antenna and radio propagations in both soft and solid condensed materials. The details are:

  1. Development of high accuracy gyrotropic media for applications in mm-wave quasi-optical systems, as non-reciprocal devices.  The work has been commercialized
  2. Non-destructive imaging of quality mapping for many large area manufacturing industries.
  3. Material properties characterisation including liquid, semi-solid and solid condensed materials. The properties include crystallisation structure, surface properties, electric and magnetic properties, and loss information.

Microwave and Terahertz Characterisation Centre (MTCC) at Thornton Science Park has a Terahertz time domain spectroscopy system (transmission, reflection and ATR modes), a 100 GHz imaging camera and an RF characterisation systems. Microwave system includes a vector network analyser from 2 MHz up to 13 GHz, a high temperature dielectric characterisation probe kit and Micro-strip resonators. The lab focuses on many microwave and Terahertz cross-disciplinary themes such as: imaging based quality control for large scale manufacturing industries; ferroelectric and ferromagnetic ceramics characterisation; time-resolved and temperature-dependent spectroscopy. The centre also can access the full range of material characterization facilities such as XRD, SEM-EDX, TEM, XPS, AFM/STM, Raman and FTIR.
