About Prof Jeff Adams

I am also Principal Editor of the International Journal of Art & Design Education, and co-director of RECAP, the centre for Research into Education, Creativity and Arts through Practice.

I am currently researching into creative pedagogies in Palestine and the UK (British Academy funding), arts-based practices in doctoral research (Canadian SSHRC funding) and creative practices in research methodologies (‘Beyond Text’ project, EU funding).

I previously led the Artist-Teacher MA programme at Goldsmiths, University of London, and have worked at the Open University, Liverpool JMU and Edge Hill University, as well as teaching art in state schools in Yorkshire and Cumbria.

I have published widely in academic journals, and my books include Creativity and Democracy in Education (with Allan Owens, 2015, Routledge); Applying Theory to Educational Research (with Cochrane and Dunne, eds., 2012, Wiley-Blackwell); Documentary Graphic Novels and Social Realism (2008, Peter Lang).

I am co-director of the research centre RECAP (Research into Education, Creativity and Arts through Practice), which focuses on international research into creativity in education. Through RECAP, I am currently researching creative pedagogies with the University of Bethlehem, a comparative project between Cheshire and the West Bank Palestine, funded by the British Academy; I am co-investigator for ‘Beyond Text’, an Erasmus+ Strategic Partnerships funded project into creative research methods; I am also institutional lead for the comparative international study of doctoral art education with Concordia University, Montreal and the University of British Columbia, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.

As Principal Editor of the International Journal of Art and Design Education, I am heavily committed to research into arts education, recently completing an inter-university project on creativity in teacher education, funded by Esmée Fairbairn. Prior to this I researched into contemporary art in education with Goldsmiths College and Tate Modern, funded by NESTA, and the impact of the Artist Teacher Scheme, funded by NSEAD.

My other research interests include: documentary graphic novels and comics; contemporary arts in education; theory in educational research; democracy in education; the professional development of teachers through the arts. I give many conference papers at international conferences, such as the keynote address to the Korean Society for Education through Art (KoSEA) annual conference in Seoul (2013) and to the Practical and Aesthetic Learning Processes (Early Years) Conference at Jönköping University in Sweden (2015). My latest book, with Professor Allan Owens, is Creativity and Democracy in Education: Practices and Politics of Learning through the Arts (Routledge 2016).
