About Dr Gerard Edwards

As the Programme Leader Gerard leads on the teaching front for EEE in terms of maintaining the degree, timetabling the modules, carrying out general coordination/administration and quality assurance matters.

Gerard together with Prof John Counsell (Head of Department) is currently looking into the feasibility of spawning a new BEng/MEng degree in Electromechanical Engineering and a new Masters degree by Research (MRes) entitled the ‘Internet of Things’, in collaboration with the Department of Computer Science.

Gerard spent five year as a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science at the University of Bolton and then changed position to a Senior Lecturer in Electrical & Mechanical Engineering for eight years, also at the University of Bolton. During this time Gerard acted as the Programme Leader for the degrees:

  • Joint MSc in Systems Engineering & Engineering Management between the University of Bolton, UK and South Westphalia University of Applied Science, Division Soest, Germany
  • Electronics and Computer Engineering BEng Degree
  • Advanced Microelectronics for Industrialists (AMI) Distance Learning MSc.

In the academic year 2013/2014 Gerard led the Development of a new Undergraduate BEng Electrical and Electronics Engineering Degree, at the University of Bolton.

Gerard pursued postdoctoral work at the Centre for Solid State Electronics Research, Arizona State University (USA) and the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Notre Dame (USA), in his late twenties/early thirties.

Gerard has taken many courses in physics/computing/mechanical engineering/electrical and electronic engineering from undergraduate to MSc level during his postdoctoral and lecturer employment.

Research

Gerard’s research background is in theoretical semiconductor physics and solid state electronics. Gerard carried out a research collaboration from 2007 – 2011 with Prof Rong Zhang, Department of Physics, Nanjing University, PRC. Gerard provided theoretical and modelling support to Nanjing’s experimental efforts in the field of the optical properties of wide bandgap semiconductors (the underlying science for solid state lighting). This collaboration resulted in seven journal publications, four of which were successfully submitted to the REF2014 from the Renewable Energy, Materials and Devices Group, University of Bolton.

Gerard has also made contributions to the area of Signal Integrity and Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) in collaboration with Dave Cullen, Test Instrumentation Manager, York EMC Services, Dr Nevil Mattey, Principal Process Engineer at Oclaro and John Phillips, Principal Application Engineer, Cadence Design Systems.

Gerard was involved in providing theoretical and computer modelling/simulation support to assist the interpretation of cone calorimeter experimental results for composite material burning, carried out by collaborators Prof Baljinder Kandola & Prof Peter Myler, at the Centre for Materials Research and Innovation, University of Bolton which resulted in three journal publications.

Recently Gerard has collaborated with German scientists Dr Werner Krybus and Dr Dominik Aufderheide at the South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences, Division Soest, Germany in the Computer Vision field working on Multimodal Sensor Fusion for Real Time Scene Modelling.

In the last year, Gerard has turned to his attention to the areas of the modelling of laser processing and his traditional field of nano-electronics. A laser processing modelling capability is intended to guide, assist and inform the experimental efforts carried out in the University of Chester Laser Laboratory.

An Exciting New Nano-electronics Initiative

In nano-electronics, Gerard is building up expertise in modelling Open Quantum Systems with the aim of applying this technique to the switching of Quantum Dot Cellular Automata (QCA) Digital Circuits, implemented in molecular systems and will be taking on a  PhD student.
