Studying the past through History and Archaeology involves exploring the events and people that shaped the world today.
We are a team of historians and archaeologists dedicated to providing the highest quality teaching and learning experience for our students as well as producing quality research and publications. We are passionate about sharing our knowledge and enthusiasm for our subjects and embed our research interests and expertise in our teaching.
"In NSS2019 over 92% of students in History and Archaeology were satisifed with the teaching on their courses."
You can study for an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in either history or archaeology, or you can combine the two disciplines at undergraduate level. We also offer combined degrees with a range of other subjects. We teach through a variety of lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops and practicals in the field and in the lab. You will benefit from our links with heritage, museum and archive agencies within the city of Chester and beyond.
The Department is also one of the leading research units within the University, with REF2014, the UK’s national assessment of research quality, recognising that the Department produces work of ‘world leading’ (4*) standard.
