About Dr Yu Jia

Dr Yu Jia is currently a Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Chester, leads the Smart Microsystems Research Group, and has been a Visiting Academic at the University of Cambridge (Department of Engineering). His research interests include vibration energy harvesting, microelectromechanical systems, nonlinear vibration dynamics and smart integrated systems. He regularly publishes in top tier scientific journals, attends international scientific conferences, is affiliated with a number of professional bodies such as IEEE, serves as reviewer for about two dozen journals, collaborates with a number of universities, and works with a number of technology companies in the form of funded collaborative projects and knowledge transfer.

He received a First Class (Honours) in MEng Electromechanical Engineering from the School of Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton in 2010. He then completed his PhD in Engineering from the University of Cambridge in 2014. From 2014 to 2015, he was a Research Associate at the University of Cambridge (Nanoscience Centre and the Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction). During his time at Cambridge, he also served as the Branch Secretary and then the Vice Chairman of the IEEE Cambridge student branch, promoting the local Cambridge presence of this global professional network. Dr Yu Jia also co-founded 8power Ltd in 2015, a Cambridge based technology company commercialising energy harvesting and industrial IoT solutions.

Teaching

Dr Yu Jia specialises in classical Newtonian mechanics, as well as teaching interests extending to mechatronics, nonlinear dynamics and MEMS.

2017 onwards: Module leader for SE5053 Applications and Design of Robotics and Mechatronics, Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Chester.

2015 onwards: Module leader for SE5045 Advanced Statics and Mechanics, and SE5046 Advanced Dynamics, Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Chester.

2012-2013: Teaching assistant (1 of 2 positions), Mechanics and Materials Division, Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge.

Research

Dr Yu Jia is interested in both fundamental and applied research in areas including: energy harvesting, MEMS (microelectromechanical systems), resonators, nonlinear vibration dynamics, sensors and smart integrated systems. He leads the Smart Microsystems Research Group with a dedicated Vibration Dynamics and MEMS lab.

One of the key applied research directions is to realise ambient vibration powered autonomous wireless sensor systems for structural health monitoring of systems such as bridges, tunnels, railways, cars, airplanes, utility distribution infrastructure, industrial process control, engines and motors, etc. In a nutshell: enabling of a self-powered, install-and-forget, wireless smart system as part of IOT (Internet of things).

One of the key fundamental research directions is to explore interesting vibratory phenomenon associated with various nonlinear oscillators, such as a Mathieu-Van der Pol-Duffing oscillator. For example, in 2014, Dr Yu Jia experimentally observed, for the first time, up to 28 orders of parametric resonance in a MEMS resonator, which was previously confined within the theoretical realm. Furthermore, a 2018 APL paper reported over 100 orders of parametric instability.
