From ‘fake news’ to ‘alternative facts’ and from the heart of the public sphere to the ‘enemies of the people’, there has arguably never been a more important time to study the media. The Department of Media takes pride in exploring and understanding the current and prospective media landscape whilst preparing students to be globally informed and industry ready.

The Department of Media sits within the University of Chester’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities and is based across both the Warrington and Chester campuses. There are approximately 350 students on our undergraduate, postgraduate and research courses, 25 permanent members of academic and support staff and a number of returning visiting lecturers.

We offer a range of courses related to the creative industries. At our Warrington Campus, there is a focus on media and broadcasting. We offer undergraduate Single Honours courses in Broadcast Production and Presenting, and Media, and Combined Honours courses in Advertising, Digital Photography, Film Studies, Media Studies, Radio Production, and Television Production. There is also the option to combine subjects within the Department of Media with other subject areas.

Our Journalism provision is delivered at our Parkgate Road Campus in Chester. We offer Combined and Single Honours Journalism, and both Single Honours Music Journalism and Sports Journalism.

We also welcome applications for postgraduate research degrees in a range of media areas and offer postgraduate taught courses in MA Broadcast Media (Warrington), MA Journalism (Parkgate Road, Chester), MA Radio Production (Warrington) and MA Television Production (Warrington).

All of our courses combine professional skills with academic studies. While our media and film studies courses put more emphasis on academic, critical and contextual aspects of study, our television, radio, journalism, photography and advertising courses offer a stronger emphasis on professional industry skills. This structure affords greater opportunities for students to select and combine courses that are the most relevant to their interests, skills and future career plans.

The Department’s staff not only have extensive teaching experience but also have impressive and diverse backgrounds in the media industry – and indeed continue to pursue their professional media practice as well as their academic research. Our staff have, for example, worked for the BBC, ITV, The Big Issue, Trinity Mirror and Liverpool FC, and have published recent books and articles on journalism, film, television, advertising, photography and music.

Our Parkgate Road Campus is located in the heart of a busy centre of culture and tourism, allowing great opportunities for media students to report on and participate in local events. Our Warrington Campus’ location between Liverpool and Manchester, with its close proximity to MediaCityUK, attracts regular guest speakers from such organisations as the BBC.
