What will I learn from studying a modern language?

90% in 'Overall Satisfaction'
Languages, Linguistic and Classics National Student Survey

You will learn to speak and understand the foreign language to ‘near-native’ level, but just as importantly, you will study the history and development of those countries where the language is spoken, both in Europe and around the world. Our option modules also offer the opportunity to study a further language from beginner level on post A-Level routes. This side of your studies will reveal not only the culture of these societies but also bring you a new perspective on your own culture. Lastly and also very importantly for your future career, as a university student you are studying a subject that enables you to develop a range of critical and applied skills, including communication skills, to a very advanced level. We believe it is this unique combination of knowledge and skills that makes modern languages graduates among the most employable graduates in Britain today.

What is the department like?
