About Dr Andrew Fogg
I graduated in chemistry from the University of Oxford with an M.Chem. (1st class) and a D.Phil. I have since worked at Curtin University, Western Australia and the University of Liverpool where I held a Royal Society University Research Fellowship for 10 years before becoming a senior lecturer in chemistry and chemical engineering at the University of Chester in 2016. My research interests are in inorganic materials chemistry and cover areas including catalysis, fuel cells, purification and separation processes. I was awarded the Royal Society of Chemistry Gibson-Fawcett Award in 2012 for his contributions to materials chemistry.
Teaching
I teach a number of chemistry and chemical engineering modules across all years of the degree programs including thermodynamics, materials chemistry and introductory chemical engineering topics.
STEM Outreach
I am also a qualified teacher (PGDE, Secondary Science, LJMU, 2015) and have a passion for inspiring the scientists of the future. Through working as a STEM Ambassador, I have developed a range of chemistry based STEM activities which can be done in schools or at the University of Chester and many can be adapted to cover the entire educational age range. In particular I do a Magic of Chemistry show which highlights many reactions that older students cover and addresses some common misconceptions or is a visual introduction to the subject for younger students.
Research
My research is focussed on synthesising and developing new inorganic materials with applications in areas including absorption, energy storage, ion exchange, pollutant trapping, catalysis and fuel cells. For example, in current projects we are looking at synthesising new forms of mesoporous silica with enhanced absorption or energy storage capacities, developing new materials for use in fuel cells and developing new methodologies for recycling waste ceramic material.
Notable achievements from previous research projects include synthesis of the first anion exchangeable cationic inorganic framework (a material with a structure similar to zeolites but with a reversed charge distribution) and layered lanthanide hydroxides and development of an energy dispersive in situ X-ray diffraction technique to study the kinetics and mechanisms of the formation of solids.
