About Dr Kate Julian

Since 1991, Kate worked in a number of Unilever operating companies in a wide range of roles including process engineering research, hygienic manufacturing, investment appraisal, supply chain and technical training. She left Unilever in 2003 to join Bristol Myers Squibb, the American pharmaceuticals company, working in the UK Head Office as Learning and Development Manager.

In 2007, Kate entered the world of higher education, initially at the University of Manchester as a consultant in both the Department of Education and the Centre for Local Governance:  she worked on leadership programmes for the National College of School Leaders and carried out research in knowledge management in partnership with Local Authorities, work funded by NWIN.  She then worked as a teacher and facilitator of work-based learning in a private company offering Masters programmes validated by Middlesex University. There she was supporting the professional development of experienced veterinary surgeons.

Kate joined the University of Chester in 2008, in an income-generating department transferring academic knowledge and experience to the local public and private sectors. At the same time she was academic advisor to Professional Doctorates candidates at Middlesex University and ran her own consultancy business.  In November 2014 she joined the new Faculty of Science and Engineering at Thornton Science Park in the Department of Chemical Engineering.

Throughout her career, Kate has developed a broad skills set, with projects in HR and in business development supplementing a base of  core engineering and technical roles. This gives her an interdisciplinary approach to research and development, and a ‘pracademic’ perspective on teaching and learning.

Her research interests are:

  • The impact of cultural background on leadership and management practice in STEM-focused operations
  • Knowledge management
  • Teaching and Learning in higher education with a focus on technical subjects, and work-based learning
  • Coaching and mentoring as interventions in support of professional practice and CPD
