About Nicola Sothern

In 2005, Nicola graduated with a First Class undergraduate degree and embarked on a teaching career which has spanned over 15 years. During this time, her roles have included building a philosophy of education which merges child psychology and sociology of the child. Currently, Nicola is employed as the Head Teacher of a school which provides education for young people who are living with trauma.

Through her professional experience of working with children to developing emotional literacy and her personal experience in elite sports environments, Nicola’s passion for the development of mental health and resilience for young athletes grew. This prompted her to embark on an MSc in Sport, Physical Activity and Mental Health in 2015. She graduated with Distinction and obtained expert knowledge of designing, implementing and evaluating interdisciplinary programmes.

Nicola’s research based upon stressors for professional academy footballers has been recommended for publication, and she is now studying towards a PhD entitled ‘What are the stressors faced by the parents of junior elite athletes, how do these manifest and what support can be offered?’
