Based at Thornton Science Park, the Faculty of Science and Engineering is located in a major research and innovation hub for the North West. Formerly the site of the Shell Research and Technology Centre, its takeover by the University has created the opportunity to apply the Centre’s legacy to the continuation of innovation and research in science and engineering in the North West.

The Faculty of Science and Engineering is involved in active research with companies located on-site at Thornton Science Park. These constitute a wide range of start-ups as well as small and medium enterprises, such as Faist, EpiValence, GHD, LayTec, and Protos. The Faculty is also involved in the following research initiatives:

In terms of teaching, the degrees offered in the Faculty are taught at Thornton Science Park using a strongly interdisciplinary teaching philosophy. We offer a range of stimulating and exciting courses in science, engineering, computing and mathematics. All degrees emphasise practical skills alongside theoretical knowledge to maximise employability opportunities for our graduates. Placements are available from a range of companies on-site and the wider North West area. In the engineering subjects, we offer both three-year Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) degrees and also four-year integrated Master of Engineering (MEng) degrees, in Chemical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, as well as Mechanical Engineering. BSc degrees in Mathematics, Computer Science and Natural Sciences (Physics and Chemistry) take three years to complete.
