About Dr Valda Swinton

After being a full-time mother bringing up three children I decided to return to full-time education when my youngest child started school. I completed my first degree in Social Psychology at Loughborough University followed by an MA in Counselling at Keele University.

After completing my MA at Keele University I worked in a number of counselling agencies and as a visiting lecturer at a Further Education College. In 1996 I joined University College Warrington (Warrington Collegiate Institute) as a Lecturer in Counselling. I am a BACP registered practitioner and UKCP registered independent practitioner.

I was a Counsellor in a GP Surgery for eleven years. Currently I have a small private practice in both counselling and supervision. My research interest is in spirituality and counselling and I hold a Professional Doctorate in Counselling awarded by the University of Manchester. I joined the Department of Social and Political Science in December 2001 from University College Warrington where I taught on the Counselling, Social Work and Undergraduate Programmes.

I am the Programme Leader for the MA in Clinical Counselling; teaching on all levels of the programme.

My research interest is in spirituality and how this links to the training of counselling practitioners.
