Tell us about your placement:

I discovered my placement in the University of Chester’s Moodle page. My placement role was that of Purchase Ledger Assistant. My main responsibility was to enter financial documents onto the accounting system of the company, however, I also had the opportunity to learn about transactional finance in MoneySuperMarket. The most enjoyable part for me was learning the different roles and duties of different parts of the organisation. The most challenging aspect for me was the start of my placement since I was trying to get used to everything including the environment and my role as a Purchase Ledger Assistant.

What skills have you developed whilst on placement?

I have developed a variety of skills during my placement. This includes my ICT skills since I was more exposed to the everyday use of a variety of software include Microsoft Excel and Workday, the accounting system the company uses.

How has your placement prepared you for your future career?

During my placement, it allowed me to experience to work in a big company. It gave me more motivation to work hard for my future career because this experience gave me a better view of different roles and responsibilities in the Accounting and Finance industry.

What have you learnt about yourself during placement?

During my work experience, I learnt more about myself regarding my work ethic and what I would like to do in the future. It gave me assurance that I want to work in the finance industry because not only do I enjoy it but it is also a challenging role.

What were your expectations before starting your placement?

I honestly didn’t know what to expect because I have never had the experience to work for such a big company. I guess I was expecting to have to work hard and I certainly did, but I enjoyed my placement much more than I ever expected.

What advice would you give to students embarking on Work Based Learning?

I would advise future students to ensure that they secure their placement as early as possible so they could attain the best and most suitable placement for themselves.

How would you sum up your placement experience?

My placement has been one of the most eye-opening experience for me. It allowed me to have an idea of what I want as my future career, but at the same time it’s been the most enjoyable and biggest opportunity for me.
