Professor Yu Shi Inaugural Lecture

The composite material has been widely developed due to its lightweight and excellent mechanical performance for aerospace, space, automotive, renewable energy, healthcare and sports industries. However, with more smart devices and transportation developed, a larger number of functional electronics would have been strongly demanded to be integrated with the designed product with massive cable and wire connections. It will undoubtedly bring the challenges on assembly with additional weight introduced from bulky control unit and management system, as well as the induced weights from massive wires and cables.
In this lecture, Professor Yu Shi will present the state-of-the-art technology that has been developed for smart composite integrated with multifunctional elements, such as nano-particles or thin film transducer to achieve the improved mechanical performance and additional sensing, energy harvesting and communication etc. The composite failure assessment, fabrication and energy harvesting will be introduced for the general carbon fibre epoxy composite, hybrid laminate and cellular sandwich structure. The computational modelling is also introduced for optimization of the parameters of designed smart composites for the various applications. The joining technology of future sustainable smart composite will be also discussed. For multifunctionalities, the smart composite will be designed for the specific application. For instance, the piezoelectric transducer will be introduced for Deicing, sensing and energy harvesting, in particular, at relatively harsh environment with mechanical performance assessment. The smart composite for the specific application such as rail vehicle is analysed in this work as well as the potentials of the prosthetics and biology applications.
