About the Event

Our A level Summer School is designed with end of year 12 students in mind and will give a taste of first year study at University. The timetable for our Maths event is designed to enhance A level subject knowledge and skills and includes:

  • Sessions to support students who are stuggling with aspects of A Level Mathematics
  • Advice on preparing for Year 13
  • The importance of mathematics and mathematics graduates in the 21st Century
  • Workshops on Student Finance and UCAS applications.

The two day event is designed to raise aspirations for University study. Students will stay overnight in our on-campus student accommodation, attend stimulating lectures and workshops and spend time with our own undergraduate students. Outside of study sessions, attendees will tour the historic city of Chester, socialise with staff and students in the Student's Union, and see all our state-of the-art sports facilities and well-stocked library.

Eligibility Criteria

This event forms part of the University of Chester’s commitment to widening participation in higher education, and therefore applications are welcomed from current Year 12 students only, with the following criteria being taken into account if the event is oversubscribed, with students who meet one or more of the following criteria being allocated a place:

  • lives in a neighbourhood which has either; low progression rate to Higher Education (please see OfS POLAR 4 data for more information), or high level of financial, economic or social deprivation.
  • has experienced local authority care for a period of longer than three months
  • is from an ethnic minority group
  • has a registered disability

Remaining places will then be allocated to all other applicants dependent on availability.

Travel Bursary

As further part of the University of Chester’s commitment to widening participation to Higher Education (HE), we are offering a Travel Bursary to support individuals to attend this Summer School, who have specific characteristics typically underrepresented in HE. The bursary is to cover travel costs for 1 person, totalling up to a maximum of £100, to enable them to attend this Summer School.

Eligible individuals must have applied to attend the Summer School, and meet at least one of the criteria outlined above.

This fund is for UK residents only. All awards are made on a discretionary basis and are subject to funding. Each case will be assessed individually.
