About the Event

Title:

See No Evil: Abuse and Trauma in Religious Contexts

Date and Time:

Thursday, 22 June 2023 – 18.00-19.30

Address:

Wheeler Building, CRV139

About the Event:

Professor Lisa Oakley, Professor in Applied Psychology, School of Psychology, University of Chester.

Lisa Oakley is a Professor in Psychology at the University of Chester and chair of the National Working Group for Child Abuse linked to Faith or Belief. In this talk, she will focus on cases of abuse in religious contexts, arguing that these demonstrate the necessity to speak about this harm which is often hidden. The recent independent inquiry into child sexual abuse (IICSA) made recommendations which impact faith groups and related contexts, but these have been criticised for not going far enough. This lecture will explore these topics, ask questions about what prevention, response and intervention could and should look like for the future and discuss examples of good practice.

All welcome and admission is free. To help with seating and refreshments, guests are encouraged to register for tickets on Eventbrite:
