About the Event

Dr Pat Starkey, Honorary Research Fellow, Department of History, University of Liverpool

If Elizabeth Macadam's name is known at all  - and, on the whole, it isn’t -  it is amongst historians of social work and admirers of Eleanor Rathbone, whose lifelong friend she was. But not being very well known was just how Elizabeth Macadam would have liked it. It is no accident that we actually know very little about her.  She doesn’t seem ever to have sought personal publicity; on the contrary, she was careful to shun any intrusion into her privacy, both during her lifetime and after her death. She left no papers - no diaries, no letters - and most of her close friends died before her. There is no photo of her in the Dictionary of National Biography, so we don’t even know what she looked like.  Moreover, she might not have been pleased to see herself as the subject of a talk at the University of Chester. But she was one of the first teachers of social work at the University of Liverpool, was Secretary to the Joint University Council for Social Science and contributed to social work literature, as well as acting as assistant and general supporter to Eleanor Rathbone.  By putting together what we know of her life, and considering those views that she expressed in her writing, this talk will assess her undoubted contribution to social work before the Welfare State.

Pat Starkey's research interests are largely in the history of voluntary social work agencies.and she is currently working on the history of the Liverpool Civic Service League and also on the Chapter of Liverpool Cathedral in the inter-war period.
