About the Event

Schools and Colleges are invited to experience an online original screendance production, workshops, and Q&A with BA Hons Dance students.

Throughout May 2021, the University of Chester’s Department of Music, Media & Performance are giving school and college groups the opportunity to see a new screendance work, and attend online creative workshops and Q&A sessions of this year's intensive experiential performance project, Zen & Now: a celebration of flow in the moment.

Zen & Now is a breath-taking movement collage that explores our unique experiences of flow in motion. We look back at a year of lockdowns to ask what we have learned about the importance of togetherness, mindfulness, observation, movement, and definitely going a bit crazy, to see how we each can find our own kind of 'Zen' through chaos. Drawing on contemporary dance, street dance, meditation, Asian martial arts, and the elements of fire, earth, air, water, and metal, Zen & Now is a dynamic exploration of how we can use our senses to become centred in any moment.

Drawing inspiration from award-winning British choreographer Wayne McGregor's artificial intelligence choreographic tools developed in collaboration with Google Arts and Culture Lab, this original production is created and performed by the emerging dance group Forseeable Fusion Dance Company, launched by BA Hons Dance students, and mentored by artistic director Malaika Sarco-Thomas.

The content of the production and workshops is suitable for ages 12+.

Schools and colleges are invited to book one of the following 1-hour workshop session that accompanies a pre-recorded screendance production of Zen & Now:

  • Dance workshop
  • Dance company Q&A (30 minutes)

Teachers will be sent a link to the Zen & Now screendance production on YouTube which can be viewed in the classroom or shared with students to watch at home in advance of the workshop.

  • Workshops can be delivered via the preferred online platform of each school or college, or on Microsoft Teams if hosted by the University.
  • To take part in the workshop it is best to have a camera and screen set up at the front of a dance studio or gym space, and for all participants to be able to see the screen.
  • Ideally workshop facilitators would want to be able to see all the students in the camera frame in order to give feedback and bespoke support.

Workshops are avaialble on the following dates, with 1 hour workshops bookable within the following morning and afternoon session times.
