Tell us about your placement:

I secured my placement through the University’s advertisement board on moodle. After submitting my CV and Cover Letter, I attended an in-person interview at Hillyer McKeown. My main duties have been to assist the marketing team with their re-brand. This has involved research tasks, writing website content, creating further content such as invites to events and also assisting the marketing manager with social media posts. Working with the team has been the most enjoyable aspect of my placement. Within previous jobs I got used to working individually, so to sit and work as part of a team has been a lovely experience for me. Hillyer McKeown’s staff are friendly and approachable making my time there a pleasure and the work enjoyable. I found the working hours challenging as the days were very long from 8.30am until 5.30pm, this is something that became easier over time and something that wll benefit me to get used to for when I hold a full-time job.

What skills have you developed whilst on placement?

My ICT skills have developed greatly, as I spent most of my time on a laptop researching or creating content. This means I am now a lot more confident in my use of programmes such as Microsoft Office and have been introduced to new websites and tools that could help me within my career. My communication skills have also been improved during my time at Hillyer McKeown. This has been between different audiences from communicating what work I was doing with my team to posting tweets on the company’s Twitter page.

How has your placement prepared you for your future career?

It has given me a solid knowledge of what it is like to work within a professional environment. It has also helped me realise how to approach new and existing clients within the workplace to create a successful network and progress in my career.

What have you learnt about yourself during placement?

I’ve learnt that even when I may not believe in my skills I am able to complete tasks promptly and to a good standard - I need to have more confidence in my ability.

What were your expectations before starting your placement?

I was expecting a stuffy office workplace and to be the tea girl. These expectations were definitely not met, but exceeded by Hillyer McKeown. I had genuine and important work to do within a friendly and contemporary office space.

What advice would you give to students embarking on Work Based Learning?

Make the most of it! Ask for tasks if you feel you are being undervalued as your help makes everyones job easier! Show that you can achieve and produce good work and you will get more important tasks to complete.

How would you sum up your placement experience?

At Hillyer McKeown I had a genuinely pleasant time, I enjoyed the work and believe I contributed well to the team, due to them providing me with real tasks that needed completing.
