The Gateway Certificate in Professional Education is a new university-level (Level 4) qualification that has been designed for people who may not have had the opportunity to go to university or would like to return to university-level study after a significant gap. It is also designed to benefit their businesses too. Through this Certificate, employees can focus on their professional development and upskill to boost their future career potential, while also bringing an immediate positive change to their organisations

What will I study?

After the core module, learners choose two other modules from three:

Core

Confidence with Technology & Technological Innovation

This is a core module which will provide employees with an introduction to the application of technology to improve business performance.

Optional

Effective Communication for the 21st Century

An optional module which will provide employees with an understanding of methods of effective communication in different scenarios, and to identify the main barriers to effective communication.

Optional

Building Agility, Resilience and Wellness

An optional module which enables employees to evaluate their personal strategies for performance and wellbeing in an increasingly complex and uncertain global environment.

Optional

Leadership, Emotional Intelligence and Change

An optional module which will give employees the opportunity to develop and apply foundational skills and knowledge in the fields of leadership, emotional intelligence and change management.

What are the entry requirements?

There are no formal entry requirements for this course. Your previous experience at work will be taken into account. The course has been designed to address your professional development needs if you have not had the opportunity to study at university in the past, or if you wish to re-engage with university-level study at this point in your career.

What is the cost and how can I fund this course?

The total fee for the course is £2,310.

Funding is available through the Higher Education Short Course Loan and the Study Support Bursary for this course, or you may be doing this course with funding from your employer.

Can my employer pay?

Yes, your employer can pay for this course, so it is worth chatting to your employer to see if there is a budget available for the professional development of employees. As the course is designed to provide skills and projects relevant to the workplace, it is of benefit to your employer – please refer them to our information for employers.

Will I have full University of Chester student status?

You will have full status as a student of the University of Chester, with access to all facilities, including libraries, the Students’ Union, and sports facilities.

All the support services are available during your studies, including careers, study skills support, disability, and wellbeing.

Student discounts – it is worth finding out what discounts are available for University students for shopping and services.

Can I study and work?

This is a short course and with the support of your employer you’ll just need the time off to attend the onsite learning sessions at our Queen's Park site in Chester (four days in total) and any day time online tutorials (up to half a day per module).

Any self-study on top can then be at a pace to suit you, so although we suggest six to eight months you can have longer to complete this course as needed.
