The Department of Geography and Environment will give you the skills to tackle the most pressing environmental and social challenges, allowing you to play your part in building a sustainable future.
You’ll study in a city that offers a wealth of opportunities to explore current social and environmental issues. You’ll work in some fieldwork sites on the doorstep of our city-centre campus; at other times you’ll travel further afield to nearby coasts, rivers, forests, or larger urban areas. One week you might be exploring the rugged landscapes of North Wales; the next you might be navigating the urban metropolises of Liverpool or Manchester. This is all in addition to a range of opportunities for international fieldwork – from New York to Naples - throughout your degree.
Our suite of modules is designed to ensure that you develop the knowledge, skills, expertise, and confidence to contribute to driving change on the issues that matter to you. A wide range of technical and soft skills – directly informed by graduate employers - are embedded throughout all three years of our degrees. These include: critical thinking, GIS and remote sensing, big data analysis, laboratory analytical methods, social science research tools, environmental monitoring, project management, and team work. We also provide an invaluable opportunity for you to gain formal workplace experience by working with a graduate employer as a part of a full-time placement at the end of Year 2. Our graduating students gain professional employment in a wide range of sectors, allowing them to apply their learning to make a difference to the issues that matter to them.
You will learn from staff that are nationally and internationally recognised experts in their respective fields, in our excellent teaching facilities in the Best Building on Exton Park campus. All our degrees also engage industry experts or professional practitioners – some of whom are previous students of the department - ensuring that students graduate with a strong sense of how to put their knowledge into practice.
Since the first National Student Survey in 2005, our degrees have consistently achieved some of the strongest outcomes across departments nationally - between 87 and 100% for overall student satisfaction year on year. This reflects the excellent working relationships between students and staff, and our commitment to teaching, learning and the student experience. Our relatively small class sizes enable us to provide a highly supportive and personalised learning experience for our students which enables them to achieve their full potential.
