We offer a range of stimulating fieldwork experiences across several core modules in your first year. These include activities in and around Chester in both urban and rural environments, which provide a distinctive outdoor 'laboratory' for group and individual fieldwork projects. Our dedicated fieldwork-based module, which runs in the Spring, enables you to choose between residential and non-residential project options, as well as thematic projects focused specifically on physical geography, human geography or natural hazard issues.  During your fieldwork you might, for example, find yourself investigating flood mitigation, studying urban microclimates, or exploring the sustainability of seaside economies.

You will find fieldwork in the department to be both fun as well as challenging. All the major Year 1 fieldwork experiences will offer you the chance to make extensive use of digital technologies and you will be encouraged to take video footage and photographs of your field activities. Depending on your project choices, you might develop skills ranging from water sampling to interviewing.  All students also build skills in visual, verbal and written communication through the presentations, podcasts and reports used to assess fieldwork.
