Context is a new academic journal created and edited by students, for students; specifically students undertaking postgraduate courses or research work in the Department of History & Archaeology at the University of Chester.

Its aim is to create a forum that promotes a lively research culture, generates discussion and debate, and allows students to contribute in a concrete way to the furthering of historical and archaeological knowledge and understanding.

This inaugural edition of the journal had its origins in papers presented at the annual History & Archaeology Postgraduate Conference, held on 15 May 2014.  The theme of the conference was ‘Conflict: society & self’

The papers collected within Context are usually a selection from the postgraduate conference, presenting a myriad of historical and archaeological interpretations of that year's theme. In doing so, they also reflect the variety of archaeological and historical research interests present within the department.

The next postgraduate conference will be held in May 2017.  Members of the postgraduate community are, once again, invited to contribute to its organisation, and to offer research papers for presentation.
