Tell us about your placement:

I organised my placement via the University. My main duties have been cleaning and hand feeding the animals. Hand feeding has been the most enjoyable aspect.

What skills have you developed whilst on placement?

I have developed many skills during my placement including time management, animal handling (varying from goslings to buzzards to hedgehogs), species identification, hand feeding, and assessing animal behaviour and health.

How has your placement prepared you for your future career?

It has prepared me in various ways, such as giving me an insight to how a marketing campaign would work in the real world.

What have you learnt about yourself during placement?

I’ve become more extroverted, I enjoy working with animals and I continue to want to learn more.

What were your expectations before starting your placement?

I expected to be fully involved in the cleaning and feeding of the animals and I feel that this expectation has been met. However, I have had the opportunity to do more handling than I expected.

What advice would you give to students embarking on Work Based Learning?

Find a placement that allows you to be heavily involved in new experiences every day. This allows you to challenge yourself as much as possible.

How would you sum up your placement experience?

Being introduced to new incoming patients daily has taught me to be adaptable and prepared me for new hands-on experiences. Overall, a hands-on and informative experience.
