Over 240 million people speak Portuguese and it is the 6th most commonly spoken language in the world. It is expected to become even more widespread as Argentina and Uruguay have now made it a mandatory language to study.
190 million speakers are found in the fast growing country of Brazil.
The Portuguese language originated in the Iberian Peninsula and through conquest and colonization has spread to become the official language of nine countries worldwide.
