At the University of Chester we believe that the best way to learn is by doing. That’s why as a student studying Natural Sciences, you’ll be given plenty of opportunities to get involved with practical sessions. Whether you’re swapping lectures for labs, or getting priceless industry experience, our fantastic Thornton Science Park makes all this possible.

Purpose Built Teaching Space

Thanks to funding from the Higher Education Funding Council for England, we’ve been able to open a brand-new integrated teaching and laboratory suite, designed specifically to enhance your learning experience. Taking the already excellent research-grade infrastructure, donated by Shell in 2014, we have built a number of integrated laboratories, providing a unique learning environment for around 60 undergraduate students at any given time.

Discussing the impact of this new development, Dr. Gavin Phillips, Programme Leader for the BSc Applied Chemistry with Biotechnology course, said:

“The new teaching laboratories allow us to integrate the practical learning of science and engineering within the teaching of theoretical concepts. This facility consists of an excellent set of technical and scientific teaching resources, which is part of a very large investment by the University in the new Faculty of Science and Engineering.”

Thornton Science Park Labs

State-of-the-art Campus

So where do we house all of these high-quality teaching spaces?

Originally home to the Shell Technology and Research Centre, Thornton Science Park is a major research and innovation hub. Spread across a 66 acre site, Thornton houses over 1 million square feet of industrial laboratories, workshops and office space for new and existing companies. As a Natural Sciences student at Chester, you’ll have the opportunity to make full use of this commercial environment, whether you’re working with industry active partners or alongside research active academics on real-life projects.
