Charlene Crossley and Dr Dean Wilkinson

‘Doing support in the pandemic: the realities of service delivery’ takes place online on Thursday, July 23. Topics for discussion will be: Policing in the pandemic; Doing support (Domestic abuse; and children and young people); and Doing support (Prisons and homelessness). The conference will close with a Symposium on Safeguarding in the pandemic.

Organisers Charlene Crossley and Dr Dean Wilkinson from the Institute of Policing have attracted a broad range of expert speakers. They include: the national coordinator for Prevent, Chief Superintendent Nik Adams; Linda Davies, Director of Tools4Change; and Associate Professor Lisa Oakley from the University, who is also the Chair of the National Working Group for child abuse linked to faith and belief. Professor Paul Kingston from the University, who is also the independent Chair of the Dudley Safeguarding People’s Partnership, will lead the Symposium discussion, alongside senior officers from within Dudley Council and Dudley neighbourhood policing, who have safeguarding responsibilities.

Co-organiser Charlene Crossley, who is a Lecturer in the Institute of Policing, said: “Through this one-day, virtual conference we hope to provide a stimulating, engaging and thought-provoking platform, where experts in their chosen field can present the realities of service delivery whilst facing an on-going pandemic. We hope the event will generate a lot of interest from academics, practitioners and students who have interest in the themes identified.”

Fellow organiser Dr Dean Wilkinson is a Leading Research Fellow in the Institute of Policing. He added: “We also hope the conference will build a community and network of practitioners and academics in various disciplines, so that we can promote a multi-agency approach to understanding the support available to those who are the most marginalised in society.”
