Digital Photography is a dynamic medium within the creative industry and one of the most dominant forces in shaping and defining contemporary society. As a Digital Photography student, you’ll have the opportunity to develop your practical skills, whilst gaining an understanding of relevant theory to prepare you for work in the photographic industry. To find out more about Digital Photography at the University of Chester, take a look at our interview with Programme Leader Mike Pumford.
How does Digital Photography at the University of Chester prepare students for work in the current and future photographic industry?
Our own research and industry advisors have shown that a combination of the creative, practical and technical skills developed within digital photographic practice should underpin the success of future media industry professionals. Our programme in Digital Photography develops those skills and facilitates their application across multiple digital platforms and media giving students every opportunity to prepare for work in the industry.
Do your lecturers have knowledge, expertise and connections in the media industries?
It is of course vital that your course gives you access to key skills, networks and knowledge. Our programme in Digital Photography features regular guest speakers (including our own successful graduates) from the photographic industry and is taught by a strong team of professionals whose work is underpinned by our own cutting-edge research. Our staff have industry backgrounds as well as experience in academia.
What can students look forward to on the course?
Our Digital Photography students will have the opportunity to gain valuable industry experience through our Work Based Learning module as well as take part in an annual international field trip to see how media industries work in other countries. Each year we also host our annual North West Media Showcase at which students and industry guests (and friends and family) get to see screenings and exhibitions of their fantastic work.
Do students have any other opportunities for professional projects and work experience?
It is increasingly important that photography students develop their own portfolios and curriculum vitae to promote their professional futures in the creative industries. In addition to our work-based learning and experiential learning modules, our digital photography students regularly produce work for professional clients as part of their studies and as extra-curricular activities.
Does your course have access to professional media facilities?
In order to prepare our students for their future career they can make use of our fully equipped photographic studio and our brand new multimedia suite and gallery. Our students have full access to our studios, high-end cameras, edit suites and Mac Labs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during term time.
