First year George launches new outdoor clothing range
Meet first year student George Toon from Northend, Preston. At only 19, he has already turned his dream of running his very own business into a reality.
Having not even completed his first year at Chester, George was keen to kick-start his business as soon as possible, and launched NorthEnd: an affordable outdoor clothing range, offering high quality T-shirts, beanie hats and softshell jackets in custom colours. Over the next couple of months he is set to launch his company website and will commence online trading.
George has always had a passion for business, meaning Global Entrepreneurship and Business Management was the perfect degree option for him. Discussing his reason behind enrolling on this course at Chester he explains, 'When I talked to staff at the Open Day they were so enthusiastic and once I saw that the course involved entrepreneurship and business pitches I knew it was exactly up my street.' And he wasn't disappointed! When asked about his experience on the course so far he replied: ‘Every week to me seems exciting and everything grabs my attention, like how to make your best pitch and selling your products.'
If like George you dream of starting your very own business venture then this course could be just the thing for you. During your second year, you’ll be encouraged to form your own company and work in a group to put business ideas in to action.
Chester Students nominated for Company of the Year
We are currently celebrating the achievement of two groups of our talented students who have been nominated for the Company of the Year Final 2016 in the Young Enterprise North West Start-Up Programme awards.
Putting their business and entrepreneurial skills to the test, the two groups developed their own businesses selling hand-crafted products: Rawr Infusion have produced a pure cacao hot chocolate, whilst Aura have created a luxury gel fragrance uniquely presented in a wooden ball.
Aura team member Maranatha, who has also been shortlisted for Student of the Year in the same competition, said: ‘My Global Entrepreneurship and Business Management Degree has been really exciting this year. As part of our course we had to launch our own business and we’ve already experienced so much success.’
With the help of industry active staff and master classes from local business leaders you too will have every opportunity to achieve success just like our current students.
An interview with first year student Elisha Nichols
So you’ve seen from our student success stories just what you can achieve through our Global Entrepreneurship and Business Management degree, but what do our students really think? We spoke to first year student Elisha Nichols to find out.
What made you choose Chester? When I first visited Chester I instantly knew I would enjoy studying here and it had great results for the business course I wanted to do.
What do you think of the course? The course is interesting and engaging and provides you with a well-rounded view of every aspect of creating and running a business.
Would you recommend this course? I would say if business is something you are passionate about then this is the course for you. There are so many opportunities available to you as a student and academic tutors make it a personal and thoroughly enjoyable experience. I enjoy it much more than I had anticipated as my course goes into so many aspects of business and provides knowledge and skills which can be used when I enter the world of work.
Did you do, or are you going to do, work-based learning? Yes, within my course I am required to do a five week placement with a company where I can use my business and entrepreneurship skills. This is one of the best things about this course as it allows you to experience what it's really like to work within a business.
What has been your greatest success in your time here? I'm only in the first half of my University experience, but the course has already allowed me to grow and become more confident in many aspects of business. I can’t wait for what I am able to achieve in the future.
Have you any advice for future applicants? Applying to do Global Entrepreneurship and Business Management at the University of Chester has been the best decision I have ever made. It’s a great University with fantastic tutors who make your learning and overall experience the best it can be.
