What is a typical day at work for you?
Plenty of tea and coffee to keep my vocal cords lubricated!
It’s a balance between my role as Deputy Head, and that of Senior Lecturer. I have days when I am definitely in one role, and others where they merge. What I love about the job are the people I work with, and that each day brings different challenges.
What is your favourite part of your job?
Being around the Learning Disability Nursing students. I am often humbled by their enthusiasm and passion for making a difference to the lives of people with a learning disability.
Do you have any exciting upcoming projects?
The 100 years RNLD campaign (#RNLD100years) has united the profession nationally and locally. There is such a positive vibe around the Faculty about this and it is going to continue until December.
I am also having a log burner installed at home, so any tips would be gratefully received.
What has been your proudest moment whilst working at the University?
Every graduation!
Can you think of one of your greatest student success stories?
There are too many to mention. Every student comes with their own thoughts, dreams, ambitions and motivation to become the best Learning Disability Nurse they can. Being part of that journey is a privilege.
Can you summarise your ‘Chester story’?
I moved to Chester in 2001 from working in Windsor as a Community Learning Disability Nurse. My role in Chester was to set up a new service for children with developmental delay/learning disabilities and behaviours. During the time managing the team I was also a nurse mentor for Learning Disability Nursing students, and a visiting lecturer at the University. In 2005 I was successful in applying for a role as a Lecturer/Practitioner, and in 2006 became a full-time Senior Lecturer. During my time at the University I have led various modules, been Programme Leader for the pre-registration nursing programme, Pathway Leader for the specialist practice degree, and in 2015 was secured the position of Deputy Head of the Mental Health and Learning Disability department.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
My spare time involves being with my husband, son, family and friends and of course my two Jack Russells, Frank and Nancy. We also spend a lot of time travelling the country with my son who plays basketball.
