We realise it can seem confusing when you’re looking at a seemingly never-ending list of university choices - it can be tricky even knowing where to begin. In this blog will give you some useful tips and offer some advice on picking the right university for you.
What universities offer the course you’d like to study?
A good place to start is to think about what you’d like to study at university. You may want to continue a subject you enjoyed at A Level like Psychology or History, or you may want to work in health and social care after university and are thinking of studying Nursing. Whatever you’re interested in, a good place to start is to check which universities offer the course you’re interested in. At the University of Chester we offer a wide range of Undergraduate degrees. You can find out more here.
What about life after university?
We know what you’re thinking, you’re not even at university yet, let’s not get ahead of ourselves! However, it is also worth thinking about what you’d like to do after university as well. Even if you’re not 100% sure what you’d like to do just yet, it’s worth investigating courses you’re interested in and seeing what opportunities are available for you while you’re studying. At the University of Chester employability is very important to us and while we want you to have a great time while you’re studying with us, we also want you to be prepared and confident for life after university. We offer a range of fantastic opportunities while you’re studying with us including real life work experience on every course.
Where do you want to live?
Everyone is different on this. You may want to stay fairly local or you might want to get as far away as possible. It’s worth having a think about the type of place you could see yourself – big city or somewhere smaller? Are you looking to commute or move into student accommodation? At Chester we have a range of accommodation options and If Chester is your Firm choice, we’ll guarantee you a room in University or partnership accommodation - so that’s one less thing to worry about.
What facilities are you looking for?
Depending on the course you’re interested in you may be looking for specific facilities, for example you may be interested in science and want to check out the labs or may be looking to sport facilities. At Chester we have a number of sites and a range of specialist facilities such as our Nursing Skills Labs at our Wheeler site and our Performing Arts practice and performance spaces at our Creative Campus, Kingsway.
What do you want to do in your free time while at university?
As well as your studies, you’ll also want to think about what you’d like to do in your free time. Whether it’s pursing something you’re already interested in or trying something new for the first time we have a range of sports teams and societies you can join. There are also a range of volunteering opportunities, which are a chance to do something valuable that will also look great on your CV.
Do you research.
Once you’ve got some ideas on where you might like to go to University it’s a good idea to check these places out and see if they’re right for you.
