Jenni Duffell, Postgraduate Student

Why did you choose to study MSc Flood Risk Assessment, Modelling and Engineering with us?

I already have a BSc from University of Sheffield and MSc from Lancaster University. My last MSc covered broad environmental subjects. I have worked in the environmental sector for about 15 years, mostly in education. I now want to specialise in an area which particularly interests me.

I searched for MSc courses in flooding and hydrology and chose this one because it is possible to study part time, it is blended online and in person and so fits around other work, and because it is very linked to industry and the flood sector. The course covers many aspects of flooding and prepares you for working in the sector.

How well are you supported as a postgraduate student?

The support has been excellent, whether this is from the Programme Leader, my PAT and other lecturers, or from other departments such as Academic Skills (ASK). Resources are available online in plenty of time and staff are always willing to answer questions.

How do you organise your postgraduate study alongside your friends and family, and other existing commitments?

Good time management skills! I work in a part time job and run my own environmental business as well as studying for the MSc. The balance of these activities as well as social life and other commitments such as committees generally works well.

How is your time at Chester helping you reach your career goals?

I plan to work in the flood/hydrology sector and I will be looking for jobs in consultancies or the Environment Agency primarily.  The course so far has given me a huge amount of knowledge and skills, and I feel that the course prepares us very well to work in this sector. I have attended some online careers and skills events that have been very useful.
