Being a first year student, especially an international one, can be challenging and sometimes daunting, but being part of this year’s BA Events Management at Chester Business School has been hugely rewarding.
The course offers a deep insight into the events industry, with theoretical and practical knowledge of all the necessary skills within the field, from risk management and creativity to location layouts and designs. So far, I have found the course interesting, engaging and fun, and I am absolutely looking forward to next year’s module when we will organise our own event.
The best part of the course is the volunteering opportunities that we are offered to help us gain first-hand experience of events. Chester is a small city, yet vibrant and full of activities. In less than three months I have been able to volunteer and engage in several events, both independent and University-led. I have helped at graduation ceremonies in the beautiful Chester Cathedral as an Event Marshal.
There have also been some magical Christmas events to be involved with and get into the Christmas spirit. I volunteered as an Event Assistant for local company Wild Rumpus at the “Lanterns at Chester Zoo” event, where visitors could wander though a Norwegian fairytale land and life-sized, hand-crafted animals and illuminations.
I also volunteered as an Event Ambassador at the Twelve Days of Christmas Lights Parade, a popular family event through the streets of Chester, including music, lights, elves, and snow! I enjoyed answering the public’s questions, managing the crowd and making sure everyone was safe.
As well as enjoying Christmas in Chester, these opportunities have provided me with invaluable experience and specific skills (e.g.: crowd management, team work, problem solving, time management and communication) that I am looking forward to improving in the future and applying to other challenges that I will face through the Events Management course.
