One of the great things about our Media Studies degree, is how we regularly play host to a number of influential guest speakers from various media fields. These talks are the perfect opportunity for our students to gain valuable advice about the industry, and have proved a great source of inspiration when it comes to thinking about future career options.

Recent speakers to visit the Department have included leading sports journalist for the Daily Mirror Dave Maddocks, well known music writer Simon Poole, and news and online editor of Kerrang! Magazine, John Longbottom; who also happens to be a Department of Media alumnus!

As a Media Studies student, talks from experts in the field will prove invaluable, allowing you to see how theoretical study can be applied to real work situations. You’ll also be able to find out about the different career routes available to you, and the necessary steps you need to take to get there.

On Monday 14th March 2016, acclaimed filmmaker Asta Philpot returned to Warrington to talk to Media Studies students about his very personal journey from BBC One Life Documentary ‘For One Night Only’ to a multi-award winning film ‘Come As You Are’ (Hasta la Vista). Asta has just returned from filming a series for VICE (2015), which is to be shown in the USA.  Students had the opportunity to gain first-hand advice about how to develop an idea, pitch it, and adapt it for various outlets, as well as ask Asta questions about his time in the industry.
