Hi everyone! It’s Hayley here again, for the last time this year – and it just so happens to be the most wonderful time of the year. In the words of Noddy Holder, it’s Christmas! To celebrate, this week we are bringing you a festive blog. Keep reading and get into the Christmas spirit as we take a look at Christmas past, present and future at the University of Chester…

Carol service with candles lit late 50s

The Past… The University Chapel is the perfect setting for carol singing and Christmas readings. Over the years, many staff and students have gathered there for our Christmas Service. In the late 50s, the Chapel was dressed for Christmas and the Service was delivered in candlelight. Do you remember attending? We also have these colour images and would love to know what year they are from… If you know, please get in touch!

The Boar’s Head Carol sings about the ancient tradition of sacrificing a boar and presenting its head at a Christmas feast. Some alumni may remember honouring this tradition in a slightly different way – with a papier-mâché boar’s head! The Principal would lead a procession from Small Hall to the Chapel, carrying the boar’s head. If you remember taking part in this, we would be delighted to hear from you!

The Present… Once again, this year a Christmas tree decorated by the University is on display in Chester Cathedral throughout the festive period. This year’s theme is the ‘Incredible Edible Tree’, which has been decorated by the Catering Services Team. The tree is covered in deliciously delicate baked goods, such as bread and biscuits, lacquered to help preserve them. Also adorning the tree are sweet treats, traditional dried citrus fruit and spices – a real feast for the eyes!

Last year’s Christmas tree focused on repurposing and upcycling. It was designed by Green Chester, using upcycled items as decorations, including snowmen from lightbulbs, and Christmas trees designed out of old book papers. Hung from the tree were twelve messages for a more sustainable Christmas, inspired by the theme of the Twelve Days of Christmas.

For anyone who would like to see this year’s tree, it is situated by the ticket desk in the Undercroft, next to the Cathedral shop.

The Future… This past year has flown by and we have welcomed new graduates into our alumni community. Next year will be no exception and by Christmas 2018, we will have welcomed thousands more to our ever-growing alumni numbers. Become a part of our future and register or update your details with us here.

In the meantime, we will continue to spread our Christmas cheer around campus and see you again in the New Year!
