On Saturday 4th December 2021, the University of Chester will be hosting a range of online events and activities for prospective students to participate in. Whether you are travelling across the other end of the UK, coming from overseas, missed out on our physical events or would prefer not to visit universities in-person just yet, then rest assured - we’ve got you covered!
What to expect?
In the run up to the UCAS deadline, Virtual Open Days are a great way to find out more information about your chosen university and all from the comfort of your own home. There are no travel restrictions, fees or social distancing measures for you to worry about. So, you can kick back, relax and enjoy all of the events that your chosen university has to offer.
Here at the University of Chester, our Virtual Open Day event will be running from 10:00 – 12:00 and includes a 360 tour of our sites and facilities; a chance for you to learn more about our academic departments, through live subject talks with academic staff; an opportunity for Q&As with tutors; space to explore our website, with links to accommodation virtual tours; and much more.
There’s also an option to speak to current students and University staff through Unibuddy, an online chat forum, where you can find out more information about the Chester Students’ Union, careers and employability, study abroad options, volunteer work, and much more. To start a conversation with one of our members, click here to start using Unibuddy.
How best to prepare for the day?
Make sure you are prepared with some ideas of subjects that you wish to study, or are interested in studying, at university. Our talks will be divided by academic departments on the day from Psychology to Health and Social Care, Sport and Exercise Sciences and more. These live sessions last 45 minutes in total and will give you a chance to find out more about your modules, course content, assessment and more. There will also be space in the talk for you to ask any questions that you may have, either by popping it in the chat box or by raising your hand using the hand icon on Teams. There will be two timeslots for these live talks on the day: one at 10:15 and the other at 11:15. A full list of departments will be available to you nearer the event.
Our live subject talks will be held via Microsoft Teams on our Virtual Open Day, so we recommend that you download this on a laptop or PC device, for the best experience, well in advance. Chrome is also the best internet provider to use, as we will be alternating between live subject talks on Teams and events live and direct on our University of Chester website.
Don’t forget to try out Unibuddy for an additional chance to chat to tutors or converse with current students about the contents of their course! If you miss an opportunity to ask questions on our Virtual Open Day, this forum is a great way to find out more about student life at the University of Chester!
If you have booked onto the event, you will receive an email confirmation nearer to the official date with all the facts you need with regards to the day’s schedule of activities.
Be Prepared
To make the most of your Virtual Open Day experience, make sure that you have done your research beforehand. Think about what is important to you when considering potential universities to apply to. Do you want a campus or a city university? Or a city university with a campus-feel? Do you want all your classes to be on one site and within walking distance from the students’ union and society venues? Or do you prefer that your classes are spread out around the city, for you to explore areas that you maybe never would have ventured before? How will you be assessed? Will it be purely through essays? Or will it be a mixture of presentations, practicals or peer reviews? How long is the library open for? Can I book a study space for silent study?
These are the types of questions you should consider before attending our Virtual Open Day, so that you can ask away and feel at ease knowing that you planned well ahead of time. Getting questions like these answered on the day could be the necessary next step in your application. You will feel a buzz of excitement having all your answers laid out in front of you and they will help you to make one of the most informed decisions of your life.
TOP TIP – Make sure to ask what services are available on site including mental health support, disability support, bursaries, year abroad options, societies, and more. Universities always offer a variety of services to guide and inspire your university journey, so make sure to make the most of these opportunities.
So, whether it is a subject-specific query or simply whether one of our accommodation options is self-catered or catered, make a note of it and have it by your side when you log in to join us on the day.
Don’t Panic
Just because you missed out on our in-person Open Days doesn’t mean you can’t get a real flavour of the University. It is what you make of it! So, make sure to plan ahead. Have everything you want to ask, or know about, written down ready to fire at academics, current students or even University of Chester staff.
If our Virtual Open Day has intrigued you, we also have Experience Day events running next year for offer holders, so you’ll be able to visit our site physically for a real 3D experience.
