My first term at university

Starting university is a big step, and for many it’s their first time living away from home in a new city with new people. I’m a first-year tourism management student and I have thoroughly enjoyed my first term at the University of Chester!  Here’s why:

Welcome Week

The first week at university was an amazing week where I met so many new people. There were lots of things to do organised by the Students’ Union such as movie nights, themed nights in the bar, Freshers’ Fair, and the Sports and Societies Fair where there were so many societies you could join to meet people with similar interests, such as Disney, Football, Dance and even Quidditch. Academic departments also organised an Introduction Day to meet others on our course. My course went on a scavenger hunt around the city which was a really good way to bond with people as well as learn your way around Chester.

Living away from home

Living away from home for the first time is a big change but for me it was so much easier than I thought it would be. I would definitely recommend keeping yourself busy as this will stop you getting homesick. Your flatmates will all be in the same boat, so you always have someone to help you through. Before long, Chester will start to feel like your home away from home.

Academic work

The work at university level is different from what I was used to. One thing I found hard to grasp was the referencing as I was unfamiliar with this. All the staff at the University are so friendly and helpful and if you’re struggling with something you can sort it out with a quick email or meeting. Whilst the first year is definitely about meeting people and having fun, it’s good to keep up with your assignments because the last thing you want do is to be stressing in the library at 2am the day the assignment is due. You normally have a while to complete the assignments, so I would recommend starting it early and then you have time to ensure it’s your best work.

Making friends

Making friends is one of the most important parts of your first term at university as your friends will be your support system throughout your time here. Don’t panic if you don’t gel with your flatmates right away or you don’t make friends in the first week. Friendships take a while to form and there are so many places you can make friends including your halls, your course and societies. Just get involved and speak to people, and you’ll meet some amazing people.

Overall, I’ve had a successful first term at the University of Chester, I have loved every minute of my time here and I can’t wait to return to Chester after a well-needed Christmas break.
