Why Chemical Engineering at Chester?
The primary mission of Chemical Engineering at Chester is to prepare tomorrow’s chemical engineers with the fundamental skills to develop their future professional lives. That is why we have designed our course to make it easier than ever to gain practical, first-hand experience alongside your academic studies. We know that there is a lot more to a great university course than lectures, tutorials and textbooks, and so we’ve utilised on-site facilities and industry contacts to ensure you get the most out of your course. After all, there’s no better way to learn than by doing!
On-site industry standard facilities
As a Chemical Engineering student at Chester you will be located at our fantastic Thornton Science Park. Operating as a working science park, there are a range of state-of-the-art facilities on campus for you to take advantage of, including purpose built laboratories and our superb pilot plant rig; designed to provide you with a fantastic learning experience in fluid flow, heat transfer, and separation processes.
The rig project was managed by Mr Phil Sturla and Dr Paul Bujac, the most experienced members of the Chemical Engineering staff here at Chester and fabricated by local suppliers, AJC Engineering of Widnes, who we plan to work closely with on future projects.
This practical, hands-on experience on campus will form an integral part of our teaching, and will enable you to put theory into practice straight from the lecture room.
Excellent work-based learning
Not confined to the campus, you’ll also be encouraged to take part in a number of work placements throughout the course. Opportunities may include a paid four week work placement during the summer of your first year, to a six week Integrated Work Placement in your second year; our excellent Work Based Learning module is perfect for giving you experience in industry and applying your theoretical study to real work situations. And, if that isn’t enough, there is also the option for a year-long industrial placement between your second and third year.
Not only will work placements look fantastic on your CV, they also go a long way in helping to build skills and discover potential career paths; putting you in good stead when it comes to making those all important decisions after graduation.
Established industry contacts
As a student at Thornton Science Park, you’ll be studying at the heart of a modern industrial research centre with over 20 engineering businesses on-site, ranging from young and developing enterprises, to large and multinational firms. This will give you plenty of opportunities to gain real insight into a professional work environment.
We also encourage local firms to take part in guest lectures, allowing you to learn first-hand from industry experts and gain useful career insights.
Local field trips
From as early as your first term, you’ll get the opportunity to attend field trips to local engineering companies in the region. Recent trips have included a visit to Essar Stanlow Oil Refinery, where students have undertaken team based problem solving with young graduate engineers, as well as a visit to the hydroelectric power station Electric Mountain in Snowdonia..
