Lecturers from the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences at the University of Chester have developed a series of online pocket lectures.

The ‘bite-size’ lectures are on a variety of sport-related topics and are available on the ‘UoC SES’ YouTube channel at: They are also signposted from the Department’s social media channels: and @sesuochester on Facebook.

Among the topics are: the science behind warming up before exercise; the use of GPS in sport; nutrition for the performance athlete; sport and social class; a sociological analysis of doping in sport; meaningful Physical Education; and lifestyle sports. Dr Carmel Edwards, who specialises in sport and exercise psychology, also presents a one-minute lecture about response to stress, and coping resources – which contains useful advice about managing stress in the current climate.

Professor Ken Green, Head of the Department of Sports and Exercise Sciences, explains how the idea originated: “These bite-size ‘lectures’ came about as a result of colleagues’ commitment to exploring innovative ways of both informing and engaging current and prospective students as well as keeping the SES community together. They’ve excited the imagination of tutors and, in my case at least, demonstrate that you can teach an old dog new tricks!”
