The information and reports that they put together will go to British Waterways who manage the canal so that they can manage the canal in a way that is good for bats. Senior lecturer, Juliet Leadbeater has worked on bats both in this country and in France and is overseeing the work. Bats are easy to count using a detector which makes their high pitched echolocation calls and feeding buzzes audible to the human ear.

The students will also use a computer programme called BatSound which will allow them to do a detailed investigation of the bats’ calls. Different aspects such as the effect of lights, trees and buildings are being investigated.
