It’s summer, exams have passed, and there are no more lectures or seminars until September. It’s the perfect time to take advantage of the nice weather and explore the city.

Whether you’re a current Chester student, prospective student or just visiting, this guide is just what you need to enjoy the summer days.

Here’s a look ahead to some of our favourite things to do in Chester over summer.

Chester Walls

Chester is undoubtedly one of the best-preserved walled cities in England, rich in medieval architecture. The city has an old-world charm, unique atmosphere and beautiful views.

The best way to see Chester is by walking the city walls, circling 1.8 miles around the city centre. Walking the walls, you will see the remains of the Roman amphitheatre, Eastgate Clock, one of the most photographed clocks in the United Kingdom (second to Big Ben), the beautiful River Dee, and much more.

The Groves

Stepping down from the walls at the River Dee you can stroll along the Groves, a riverside walk starting at the end of Lower Bridge Street and finishing near Grosvenor Park.

On the river bank you can stop for a bite to eat at Hickory’s Smokehouse (make sure to grab a grape soda or homemade lemonade), or an ice cream at Snugburys.

Grosvenor Park Open Air Theatre

If you’re a fan of green space, don’t miss out on the beautiful Grosvenor Park. The park, covering 20 acres, is grade II* registered, Green Flag award-winning, and dates back to 1867.

The Victorian park is lined with trees, statues, and colourful flower displays throughout summer. Ran by Storyhouse, the Grosvenor Park Open Air Theatre is back for its 10th year, with performances running through the summer it’s a must see.

Storyhouse

Storyhouse hosts a wealth of activity throughout the year, this summer’s highlights include: the Chester Music Festival, on stage performances (from Open Air Theatre to must-see musicals such as the Rocky Horror Picture Show), and the Moonlight Flicks.

In addition to the above, the cultural centre is home to many regular clubs, from book clubs to board game sessions.

Chester Zoo

It wouldn’t be a complete list without mentioning Chester Zoo, a massive hit with our students and visitors to Chester alike.

Chester Zoo is the most visited zoo in the United Kingdom, and is a conservation and education charity committed to preventing extinction. Spanning 125 acres, Chester Zoo is home to over 27,000 animals and has 1.9 million visitors every year.

This list is some of our favourite things to do over the summer while in Chester, but just touches on the events, activities and festivals in the area. If you visit any of our recommendations, let us know what you think by using the hashtag #MyChesterStory and tagging @uochester
