Everyone wants to have a fun time at university without breaking the bank. While Warrington has an excellent nightlife, you might be wondering what there is to do during the day. Therefore, I have put together a list of great attractions that cost £10 or less to keep you entertained while saving on your student loan!
Firstly, the gorgeous Walton Hall & Gardens are free to walk around. However, it is worth noting that it is about a forty-five-minute walk from Warrington town centre or a ten-minute drive. The Walton estate itself is a beautiful hall built in the 1830s and sometimes serves as a museum that discusses the history of the Gardens, which were transformed in the 1930s. While it is a little chilly at the moment, walking around the gardens in autumn with the leaves crunching underfoot warms your heart. Other outdoor activities include Adventure Golf, which costs only £6 per adult, and Pitch ‘n’ Putt, which costs only £8 per adult!
There is also a free Children’s Zoo at Walton Hall & Gardens. Dating back to the 1960s, it houses alpacas (my personal favourite), donkeys, rabbits, pigs, sheep, goats, and all kinds of birds, but most notably the noisy peacocks, to name a few. The ponds and gardens also contain several turtles and tortoises that have been adopted by the estate due to the abandonment following the controversy of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in the ‘90s.
We also have Warrington Museum & Art Gallery, which is also free to enter and situated in the heart of Warrington town centre. This museum contains thousands of artefacts from Warrington’s local history. My favourite exhibit is that on the Industrial Revolution in Warrington, detailing the history and development of the local working class in the wire industry – which inspired the nickname of the Warrington Wolves, The Wire.
The museum also contains an Ancient Egyptian mummy within its ancient history exhibit, as well as a range of other artefacts. The free art gallery contains several exhibitions showcasing the work of local artists, such as the postmodern art of Christopher Shaw.
Another free museum worth visiting is The Museum of Policing in Cheshire, conveniently placed right near Warrington Bank Quay railway station. In short, this small museum outlines the history of policing throughout Cheshire. It’s definitely worth checking out if you’re a Policing student in Warrington, while History and Archaeology students at the University of Chester may find the gruesome history of public executions in Chester from 1554 right until 1867 very interesting.
If museums aren’t your cup of tea, then there is also Superbowl UK that recently opened in Warrington Golden Square shopping centre. Those with a valid student ID can play two games of bowling for £10, otherwise, one game of bowling only costs £8.50. Superbowl UK also has an Adventure Golf activity available for £5!
