Niamh Roberts, 21, from Ellesmere Port, enjoyed a year’s placement at the resort as part of her four year International Tourism Management degree with University of Chester Business School, which encourages students to consider a year out in industry to broaden the scope of their studies.

After a attending a selection day with Yummy Jobs, who the Business School has worked with for a number of years to provide placements, she was successful and secured her dream placement in the Sunshine State.

Niamh said:  “Working for Walt Disney World not only provided me with hospitality/entertainment specific experience but enabled me to learn from a leading company in the field. The experience was extremely valuable and enriching as it presented the opportunity to study at Central Michigan University and was a great insight into how one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations operates.

“This combined with the intensive interview process followed by the two week training schemes for both role locations, Disney Traditions and Orientation, enabled me to develop myself and enhance my skill set. Primarily the experience taught me how to deliver high quality customer service, enhanced my confidence by encouraging me to be more self-assertive and to say yes to every given opportunity.”

Niamh enjoyed her work experience so much that she is returning for a second visit.  Having completing her studies she has secured another placement with Yummy Jobs and will be heading back to Orlando, Florida in November for a 12 month management internship with Marriott at the Swan and Dolphin Hotel located on Walt Disney’s Boardwalk.

The internship will provide on-the-job exposure within Rooms Division and includes role rotation in the following resort operations: Front Desk and Concierge, Resort Guest Services, PBX and Front Desk Back Office.

Niamh has enjoyed her studies at Chester. She said: “University involves many big decisions, the biggest for me being the course I wanted to study and where. In my experience, the bigger universities lacked a personal touch and when visiting I felt like just another number.

“After the first visit to the University of Chester, the lecturers remembered me and what we had discussed previously and I really valued that.

“The International Tourism Management course provides countless opportunities to develop both your skills and knowledge as well as networking with industry professionals. The tourism modules are also catered to current issues in the real world which made me feel more prepared when spending the year in industry as it enabled me to put my new found knowledge into practice.”

Impressively the jet-setting student also found time to volunteer extensively throughout her studies.

She said: “I have particularly enjoyed building upon my extra-curricular activities during my time at the University of Chester. Throughout my degree, I have completed over 150 volunteer hours achieving the UCV Gold award, the Chester Difference Excellence Award, become a student trustee for Chester Students’ Union, a member of student council, a student experience representative, a student and departmental ambassador and completed a Unijob position with the Development and Alumni Relations Office as an Event Assistant. Each experience has allowed me to refine my skill set and further enhanced my employability which I believe will help me in my future career.”

Niamh has also been pleased to have inspired other students to take the tourism and Disney placement route as well.

Hollie Chichester has just completed the first year of an International Tourism Management degree at Chester thanks to meeting Niamh while she was on holiday at Walt Disney World.  The 19-year-old from Mansfield was so inspired by seeing what Niamh was doing as part of her degree course that she accepted her place at Chester Business School on a four year degree with a placement option and hopes to also be going to Walt Disney World after her second year of study.

Martin Metcalfe, Programme Leader for the course, said: “The opportunities open to our students in addition to their degree are life-changing experiences. Working with Yummy Jobs we are able to offer students the chance to live their dreams and have a magical time.”
