Having decided upon a new direction, she applied through Clearing to study at the University of Chester and says it’s the best decision she’s ever made.

“I’ve always loved travelling and when I found out about the International Tourism Management course through the University website, I knew it was the course for me,” says the 20-year-old from Shrewsbury.

“Since I made my decision so late, I had to apply through Clearing – it was the best decision that I have ever made.

“One thing I love about the University is that there are always opportunities to gain real-life experiences that will make your CV shine after graduation.

“There are work placement opportunities during the summer term of the second year and the chance to do a placement year.”

During the summer break after her first year, Rachel spent the holiday period working in the USA through a company that the University works with.

“I worked in a shop on Santa Catalina Island, California just off the coast of Los Angeles where many tourists visit during the summer months,” she said.

“I had the best experience, which has enhanced my CV and has already helped me when applying for jobs and placements.”

For Rachel, the best thing about the University is the amount of support available to all students, whether that's help with study skills, CV writing or applying for jobs.

“The lecturers and tutors are always there to help, so you never have to fall behind,” she says.

“They make an effort to get to know all their students and it’s nice knowing there’s always the support available.”

And when it comes to studying and living in this historic, tourist destination, Rachel is a big advocate.

“Chester itself is a beautiful, historic city that’s perfect for living away from home for the first time. It’s welcoming and friendly, with shops, restaurants, with an amazing zoo to explore and a fabulous nightlife. The University has many campuses around the city so you’re never far from the city centre,” she says.

Describing the University’s Clearing process as ‘very easy and stress-free’, Rachel adds: “Clearing turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to me as it led me to the right place, and I’m sure it will take you where you are meant to be.”

Martin Metcalfe, Programme Leader for International Tourism Management, said: “Rachel is a perfect example of someone who totally immerses herself in the International Tourism experience, both in her studies and assessments and by undertaking extra-curricular activities.

“She spent the summer of 2019 on a very enjoyable period of work experience in California, USA and she has been successful in attaining a full year of study and work with Central Michigan University/Walt Disney World in Florida, fulfilling a lifelong dream for her.”
